Barshop Institute for Longevity & Aging
Barshop Institute is the only aging-intensive research institute in the country to have the following four designations: two NIA-funded centers (Nathan Shock and Claude D. Pepper), a testing site of the NIA-sponsored Interventions Testing Program, and a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center.
Mays Cancer Center
Mays Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated cancer center in South Texas and now affiliated with the sister institution, UT MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. This affiliation fosters collaborations to advance breakthrough cancer research and streamlines protocols for multi-site clinical trials. In 2017, the center secured over $40 million in extramural grants, and more than 1,300 patients had the opportunity to participate in clinical trials.
Institute for the Integration of Medicine & Science
The Institute for the Integration of Medicine & Science (IIMS) mission is to integrate clinical and translational research and career development across the university. Through a $5 million-dollar annual NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), the institute supports early-career investigators. In fiscal year 17 early-career investigator, Bianca Cerqueira (’16 Ph.D. Bioengineering), co-founded Novothelium, a startup focused on breast reconstruction.
